ANTHROPOLOGIE ANNOUNCES A NEW EXHIBITION:
‘LONDON, ZOOMED IN’ BY BARBARA MACFARLANE
IN COLLABORATION WITH REBECCA HOSSACK ART GALLERY
28TH AUGUST – 6TH OCTOBER

Barbara Macfarlane is a painter who captures the essence and drama of wide, open spaces, for the contrasting elements of land and sky and water, for how they take the light, for how they meet and merge. She searches out these things across a wide variety of terrains: the coastline of West Sussex to the sun-flooded hills of the South of France; the Greek islands; the Outer Hebrides; and more recently, in the historic maps and panoramas of Early Modern townscapes. In the summer of 2012 Macfarlane began investigating antique maps from the 18th and 19th centuries and has used these as starting points for her new work. For this show Macfarlane has focused on London exclusively for us.

Alongside the gallery Anthropologie have commissioned a limited edition exclusive collection of sketchbooks with original artwork covers by Barbara. The sketchbooks are made in India by Khadi Papers, a company started by Barbara and her husband in partnership with Indian papermaker Vasudevan to introduce Indian handmade papers to artists worldwide. The paper is made from 100% long fibred cotton rag sourced from T shirt cuttings.
Set up over 20 years ago, the mill, KHADI PAPERS INDIA, now directly employs over 60 men and women from local villages and indirectly provides work for bookbinders, printers, envelope makers and the carpenter, Irrappa, who makes all the moulds and deckles.
